Where does all the money for roads, bridges, transit, airport and the port come from? The state Transportation Trust Fund - and there's no money for new projects.
The Transportation Trust Fund allows Maryland to meet growing transportation service and infrastructure needs and maintenance. Without adequate funding, transportation related programs and projects such as bridge upkeep and highway maintenance would not get completed.
Maryland's need for transportation is growing
- We drive 31 percent more than fifteen years ago
- Bay Bridge traffic is up 43 percent since 1992
- Twice as many people fly out of our BWI-Marshall airport daily
- And the port handles 60 percent more cargo
What does this mean for Maryland commuters?
- Each year, citizens spend 60 million hours sitting in traffic
- 40 million gallons of fuel is wasted annually
- Maryland spends $3 billion a year from traffic congestion
What could $600 million get us?
- Transit improvements
- Expanded capacity through new highways or expanding existing ones
- Airport improvements to meet future aviation demand
- Dredging alongside port berths and maintenance of channel depth to remain competitive and increase economic development
- Improved intersections
- Bridge structural repairs and new high capacity bridges
The Transportation Trust Fund needs $600 million, or else Maryland comes to a full stop.
